A Brief History of Ocala and Our Newest Plant Locations

Whether you call it Kingdom of the Sun, Brick City or the Horse Capital of the World, Ocala boasts a history much richer than most…

Ok, so how do you earn the nickname “Kingdom of the Sun”? With sunny, mild winters, agriculture thrived in Ocala in the mid-1800s and grew in great proportions due to bountiful tobacco, sugar cane and cotton crops. That’s how.

In the 1880s, wooden buildings were replaced with more sturdy, durable brick structures after a devastating fire, hence the name “Brick City”.

A horse is a horse of course, of course, and no one grows them better than Ocala. Limestone is an abundant source in Ocala, and since it is a good source of nutrition for horses, you guessed it…Ocala also earned its “Horse Capital of the World” moniker. This area is proud to claim 39 national champs and remains a top breeding center in the nation.
